By Via Avantgarde

The essentials in 30 seconds

Salvador's free New Year festival, the Festival Virada Salvador, runs from Wednesday 30 December 2026 to Sunday 3 January 2027 at the Arena O Canto da Cidade on the Boca do Rio seafront, with Ivete Sangalo leading the midnight countdown. Choosing where to stay for New Year's in Salvador means choosing between the big stage at Boca do Rio, the fireworks and beaches of Barra and Rio Vermelho, or a quieter base in the historic centre that also puts you at the start of the Lavagem do Bonfim on 14 January. New Year's week is one of the busiest of the year; January as a whole had 77% hotel occupancy in 2026, so book the nights around the 31st first.

New Year 2026–27 dates in Salvador

Festival Virada Salvador

The city's own New Year festival is free and open to everyone. For 2026–27 it moves later than the year before: five nights from Wednesday 30 December to Sunday 3 January, instead of 27 to 31 December. By 20 October 2026 only the headliners of the 31st had been announced, Ivete Sangalo and Bell Marques, with Ivete leading the countdown. The other nights are announced closer to the date, on the festival's official site.

The stage is the Arena O Canto da Cidade, on the Boca do Rio seafront, near the Salvador Convention Centre. In the 2025–26 edition, more than 800,000 people went to the arena, according to A Tarde. A paid area, the Lounge Virada Salvador, sells separately: its first-lot prices for 2026–27 ran from R$ 340 to R$ 420 a night at full price on the other nights and R$ 1,840 (about US$ 355) on the 31st, with an open bar and an 18+ age limit.

Good to know: in the 2025–26 edition, three special bus lines ran to the arena from 17:40 to midnight, from Terminal Acesso Norte, Estação Pirajá and the Pituaçu metro station, and ride-hail pick-ups were on Avenida Octávio Mangabeira near the Convention Centre. Check the 2026–27 transport plan in late December.

Fireworks across the city

You do not need to be at the arena at midnight. For New Year 2025–26 the city set off fireworks at more than twenty points, listed by A Tarde: along the seafront at the Farol da Barra, Rio Vermelho, Amaralina, Jardim de Alah, Boca do Rio, Patamares and Itapuã; in the old city at Santo Antônio Além do Carmo, Boa Viagem and Ribeira; in the suburbs; and on the islands of the Bay of All Saints, Ilha de Bom Jesus dos Passos, Ilha dos Frades and Ilha de Maré. Check the 2026–27 list in the last days of December.

Many people spend the turn of the year on the beach or the promenade near where they are staying, dressed in white, and jump seven waves at midnight. Our guide to New Year's and Iemanjá in Salvador explains the traditions.

Boca do Rio and the beaches east. If the Virada stage is the reason for your trip, stay close to it. These are residential beach neighbourhoods with hotels along the seafront avenue, and on the 31st you can walk to the arena and back.

Barra. The classic beach base, with the lighthouse and its fireworks, the Porto da Barra beach, and the promenade for a walk after midnight. You will need a taxi or a bus for the Virada stage.

Rio Vermelho. Salvador's going-out district, with its own fireworks and the bars around the Largo de Santana and the Largo da Dinha. A good choice if the plan is to eat and drink late every night of the holiday.

The historic centre. The upper town is the base for people who want New Year's as part of a longer stay in Salvador, rather than as one big night. The Pelourinho squares, the churches and the museums are on foot; the fireworks in Santo Antônio Além do Carmo are about 2 km away, around 26 minutes on foot from the Elevador Lacerda; and two weeks later the Lavagem do Bonfim starts right below the elevator.

From New Year's to the Lavagem do Bonfim

If you can stay on after the 1st, the first half of January is one of the best times to be in the old town. The Lavagem do Bonfim falls on the Thursday before the second Sunday after Epiphany, which in 2027 is Thursday 14 January. The procession of baianas in white, with their jars of scented water, leaves the Basilica of Nossa Senhora da Conceição da Praia in the Comércio, a short walk from the foot of the Elevador Lacerda, and walks about 7 to 8 km to the Bonfim church. In 2026 the ecumenical service at the Conceição da Praia began around 7:30 to 8:00 and the baianas set off around 9:30, so staying in the upper town lets you be there early without a car. Read our Lavagem do Bonfim guide and Bonfim church guide for the day itself.

Later in the month, the ticketed Festival de Verão Salvador returns on 23 and 24 January 2027 at the Arena Festival in Wet Eventos, on Avenida Luís Viana in the Paralela district. The line-up announced in September 2026 includes Maria Bethânia, Gilsons, BaianaSystem with IZA, O Grande Encontro, Marina Sena, João Gomes, Saulo, and Timbalada with Olodum.

Getting around on the 31st

The historic centre is about 14 km by road from the Boca do Rio arena, which is around 30 to 40 minutes in normal traffic and much longer on the night of the 31st. Plan the way back before you go: either stay near the stage, or watch midnight close to where you sleep and go to the Virada on one of the other nights, when the crowds are smaller. Ride-hail prices rise sharply around midnight; agree a meeting point with your group in case the phone network is slow. For the metro, buses and the airport link, see getting around Salvador.

When to book

Book the nights around the 31st first. Hotel figures show how uneven the season is: Salvador's hotels averaged 66.9% occupancy in December 2025 and 77% in January 2026, with an average daily rate of about R$ 900 (about US$ 170) in January, according to the hotel association Abih-BA, so the pressure is on a handful of dates, the New Year's nights and the big events, rather than on the whole month. Many hosts set minimum stays over New Year's; read the listing rules and the cancellation terms before you book flights. If the 30th to the 1st is too expensive, arriving on the 2nd still gives you the last two nights of the Virada and the whole of early January.

Our suites in the Cidade Alta

Via Avantgarde has four suites in the Cidade Alta, a few minutes on foot from the Elevador Lacerda and the Pelourinho. Over New Year's they suit people who want the old town as a base, the start of the Lavagem do Bonfim near the foot of the elevator, and a quiet street to come back to. The Historic Loft is a studio beside the elevator. The suites are booked on Airbnb, and you message the host through Airbnb about New Year's dates. See our four suites.
