The essentials in 30 seconds

Salvador in December is hot, mostly dry and full of feast days. The month opens with the Festa de Santa Bárbara on Friday 4 December 2026, when the Pelourinho fills with people in red, and the Festa de Nossa Senhora da Conceição da Praia on Tuesday 8 December, a city holiday, at the basilica near the foot of the Elevador Lacerda. Santa Luzia follows on Sunday the 13th, the city's Christmas lights filled the historic centre from 5 December to Epiphany in 2025, and the free Festival Virada opens on the 30th. Expect highs around 31°C, a sea near 27°C and sunsets around 18:00.

Weather in December

December is early summer and one of the drier months in Salvador. INMET, Brazil's national weather service, gives a 1991-2020 average high of 30.6°C (87°F) and an average low of 23.5°C (74°F) for December at its Salvador station, with 63.4 mm (about 2.5 in) of rain for the whole month. Recent Decembers have stayed close to that pattern: 85.9 mm on six rainy days in 2023, a warm month with an average high of 32.3°C, and only 21.7 mm on five rainy days in 2024. Five or six days with rain in a month leaves a lot of beach time.

The sea averages around 27°C (81°F). The days are the longest of the year, close to 12 hours and 53 minutes around the solstice, and the sun is strong.

Thu 31 Dec4:475:1118:0318:27
Good to know: times are local time, UTC-3, all month. By 7:00 the sun has been up for two hours, so beach mornings start early, and the Christmas lights in the old town look their best from about 18:30, once the last light has gone.

Summer, school holidays and crowds

Summer officially begins at the solstice, at 17:49 on Monday 21 December 2026, but the season starts earlier in practice. Bahia's state schools finish the 2026 school year on 16 December, with final make-up exams on 17, 18 and 21 December, so the second half of the month is holiday time for Bahian families.

December is not the fullest month for hotels. Salvador's hotels averaged 66.9% occupancy in December 2025, according to the hotel association ABIH-BA, with a wide spread: 76.6% in Itapuã and Stella Maris, 73.5% in Barra and Ondina, 59.7% in Pituba and 56.7% in the historic centre, as leisure hotels filled and business travel dropped. The pressure falls on the days around New Year, which our New Year accommodation page covers.

Cruise ships add day visitors. Salvador expects at least 44 calls and about 175,000 cruise passengers between October 2026 and April 2027, and from December the 6,334-passenger MSC Virtuosa runs seven-night Northeast cruises. On 28 and 29 December 2025, three ships brought more than 8,000 passengers. Ships dock in the Comércio, below the Elevador Lacerda, so on ship days expect more people at the elevator, the Mercado Modelo and the Pelourinho; see our cruise port guide.

Festa de Santa Bárbara, 4 December

The first of Salvador's summer feasts is also one of its oldest. IPAC, the Bahia state heritage institute, dates the devotion to 1641, when a chapel to Santa Bárbara stood at the foot of the Ladeira da Montanha; after a fire, her image moved to the Igreja do Corpo Santo and then to the Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Rosário dos Pretos on the Largo do Pelourinho, whose brotherhood, the Venerável Ordem Terceira do Rosário dos Pretos, still organises the feast. The festival has been registered as part of Bahia's intangible heritage since 2008.

Santa Bárbara is the Catholic protector against storms, lightning and thunder, and the patron of firefighters. In Candomblé the day also belongs to the orixá Iansã, and the shared colour is red: on the 4th the old town fills with people in red, many with touches of white, and the brotherhood welcomes devotees of both. Our Candomblé guide explains how saints and orixás came to be paired.

How the day runs. In 2025 the programme began with a triduum at the Rosário dos Pretos from 1 to 3 December, with the rosary at 17:00 and mass at 18:00. On the 4th there were fireworks at 6:00, then the Salva dos Clarins, a bugle salute played from the balconies of the Centro de Culturas Populares e Identitárias at 7:00, and an open-air mass at 8:00 on the Largo do Pelourinho. The procession then left the church along Rua Gregório de Mattos, Rua João de Deus, the Terreiro de Jesus, the Praça da Sé and the Ladeira da Praça down to the fire station in the Barroquinha, and came back by the Baixa dos Sapateiros, Rua Padre Agostinho and the Pelourinho. After the religious part, nine acts, with rodas de samba, traditional groups and Afro-Bahian artists, played across the four squares of the Pelourinho.

The fire station. The stop at the 1st Firefighters' Battalion in the Barroquinha goes back to a fire decades ago at the Mercado de Santa Bárbara in the historic centre. The saint's image was sheltered in the Barroquinha barracks while the market was rebuilt, and the procession has entered the barracks in thanks ever since. In 2025 about 150 firefighters handed out more than 1,500 portions of caruru, the okra stew traditionally offered to Iansã on this day, and sprayed holy water over the crowd from an aerial ladder truck, one of the moments people wait for most. In 2023 the caruru was served at noon. In the Pelourinho, the Afoxé Filhos de Korin Efan, on Rua do Passo, had offered its own caruru to Iansã on the feast day for more than 20 years by 2023.

Good to know: 4 December 2026 is a Friday. Wear something red, be on the Largo do Pelourinho by about 7:30 for the 8:00 mass, and walk with the procession down the Ladeira da Praça to the Barroquinha. In the crowd, keep your phone in a front pocket and carry only what you need; our safety guide has more tips.

Conceição da Praia, 8 December

Nossa Senhora da Conceição da Praia is the patron saint of Bahia, and her feast is described as the oldest religious festival in Brazil: in 2025 it marked 476 years. The devotion goes back to 1549, when Tomé de Sousa, Brazil's first governor-general, brought her image from Portugal and placed it in a small chapel in the lower town. That chapel became today's church in the Comércio, raised to the rank of basilica by the Vatican in 1946. It stands a short walk from the foot of the Elevador Lacerda, and our churches guide describes the painted ceiling inside.

The 8th is a municipal holiday in Salvador, so public offices close and the elevator runs its Sunday and holiday hours, 7:00 to 21:00. In 2026 the 8th falls on a Tuesday.

How the day runs. In 2025 the solemn novena ran from 29 November to 7 December, every evening at 19:00, with a daily mass at 16:30. On the 8th the alvorada, the dawn salute, opened the day at 5:00, and there were masses inside the basilica at 5:00, 6:00, 12:30, 14:00 and 15:30, the last one called the Missa da Amizade. The main event is the open-air mass at 8:00 in front of the basilica, celebrated in 2025 by Cardinal Sergio da Rocha, Archbishop of Salvador, and followed by the procession: the images of Nossa Senhora da Conceição da Praia, the Child Jesus, Santa Bárbara, Senhor do Bonfim, Santa Dulce dos Pobres and São José are carried through the main streets of the Comércio and back to the basilica for the final blessing.

Other Conceição parishes hold feasts the same day. In Itapuã, in 2025, the procession left the parish church at 16:30, climbed the Ladeira do Abaeté and returned for an open-air mass at 18:00, a fine end to a beach day there.

Santa Luzia, 13 December

On 13 December, devotees of Santa Luzia, the 3rd-century martyr of Syracuse and patron saint of eyesight, gather at the Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Pilar, on Rua do Pilar in the lower town. The Pilar brotherhood arrived in Salvador in 1718 and began the church in 1756. In the early 1800s a fire destroyed Santa Luzia's chapel by the port, her image moved to the Pilar, and the church took her name as well. IPAC restored it in 2011 and 2012.

Beside the church, a spring runs from a grotto in the hillside. Popular tradition holds that its water cures or prevents eye disease, and A Tarde notes it has never run dry. On the feast day people wait, sometimes for hours, to bathe their eyes there and fill bottles to take home. In 2024 the procession set out into the Comércio at about 11:15, went as far as the Conceição da Praia basilica and returned to the Pilar, with a mass at 17:00.

Good to know: 13 December 2026 is a Sunday. The Plano Inclinado do Pilar, the funicular from Santo Antônio Além do Carmo down to Rua do Pilar, has been out of service since 8 October 2026; check whether it has reopened, and otherwise take a taxi or ride-hail from the upper town. Bring water and a hat for the queue.

Christmas in Salvador

Since 2023 the city's Christmas programme, Natal Salvador, has been centred on the historic centre rather than the Campo Grande square. The 2025 edition ran from 5 December 2025 to 6 January 2026, and the city counted more than 1.7 million visits to the 2024 attractions, including 300,000 to Santa's house. By late October 2026 we had not found the 2026 programme (the 2025 one was detailed at the end of November). The 2025 edition, as a guide to what to expect:

  • Rua Chile: a tunnel of light and sound almost 400 metres long with more than 25 million micro-lights, and the route of the Corte Soteropolitana do Menino Jesus parade, with four floats and about 800 performers, on 5, 13, 14, 19, 20 and 21 December.
  • Avenida Sete de Setembro: a 1.3 km corridor of light cascades from the Casa D'Itália to the Praça Castro Alves, where an LED curtain covered the Palácio dos Esportes.
  • Praça Municipal: the Palco Anunciação stage, with choirs and orchestras every day at 17:00 from 5 to 25 December.
  • Terreiro de Jesus: an 18-metre tree, lights on the Catedral Basílica and the Igreja de São Domingos, and laser shows; the Casa do Papai Noel was in the Faculdade de Medicina building, open daily from 17:00 to 22:00 until 25 December.
  • Praça da Sé and Largo de Santo Antônio Além do Carmo: Christmas villages with bandstands, fairs and children's areas.
  • Pelourinho balconies: choirs and children's groups at 18:30 from 7 to 13 December.

The city also lit avenues such as the Oceânica, Garibaldi and ACM, and added a free Christmas Day mass with Frei Gilson at 19:00 and a free Roberto Carlos concert at 17:00 on 26 December, both at the Arena O Canto da Cidade in Boca do Rio.

Good to know: the Praça Municipal stage is at the top of the Elevador Lacerda, and Rua Chile, the Praça da Sé and the Terreiro de Jesus are a short walk away, so one evening stroll after 18:30 takes in most of the decorations.

Christmas Eve and Christmas Day

For Brazilian families the big meal is the ceia on Christmas Eve, usually served late, around 22:00 or 23:00, with roast turkey, fried salt cod, farofa, fruit and rabanada, a Brazilian French toast, for dessert. Many people go on to midnight mass. If you want a restaurant dinner on the 24th, book ahead and check its holiday hours.

In 2025 most malls opened from 9:00 to 18:00 on the 24th, some closing at 17:00. On the 25th mall shops were closed, while food courts and leisure areas at Salvador Shopping, Shopping Barra and several others opened from 12:00 to 21:00; Shopping Center Lapa closed completely. Bank branches close on the 25th, but Pix works as usual. The metro ran its normal 5:00 to midnight service on Christmas Day 2025, and the ferry-boat to Itaparica ran around the clock. Buy what you need for a quiet Christmas lunch by the afternoon of the 24th.

Summer music in December

December is when the summer rehearsal season, the ensaios that build up to Carnival, gets going. Timbalada plays six Sunday rehearsals at the Candyall Guetho Square, in the Candeal neighbourhood, between 15 November 2026 and 14 February 2027, and two of them fall in December: the 6th and the 20th. In December 2025 floor tickets started at R$ 150 (about US$ 29) in the half-price first batch; 2026 prices had not been announced by mid-October. For the drumming in the old town, see our guide to Olodum and the bloco rehearsals.

Beaches and day trips

December's long, mostly dry days suit the beaches. With sunrise around 5:00, the hours between 7:00 and 10:00 are the gentlest for the sand, and late afternoon is good again from about 16:00. INEMA, the Bahia environment agency, tests the water weekly at 134 points along the state's coast and publishes each beach as própria (fit for bathing) or imprópria; look at the latest bulletin before you choose a beach. Our beaches near Salvador guide covers the coast beyond the city.

The long days also suit the bay: see our Bay of All Saints guide for boat trips and island crossings, and book catamaran seats and tours ahead for the days between Christmas and New Year.

New Year's Eve

The month ends with the free Festival Virada Salvador, from 30 December 2026 to 3 January 2027 on the Boca do Rio seafront. Our page on where to stay for New Year's in Salvador covers the stage, the fireworks, getting around on the 31st and when to book, and New Year's and Iemanjá explains the white clothes and the seven waves.

One older tradition happens on the water. The feast of Senhor Bom Jesus dos Navegantes, held for more than 200 years, brings the image of Bom Jesus by boat from Boa Viagem to the Conceição da Praia basilica on the afternoon of the 31st. In 2025 a land procession set off for the Praça da Boa Viagem at 14:00, an open-air mass followed at 15:30, and the image sailed aboard the galeota Gratidão do Povo at about 16:00. On 1 January, after an 8:00 mass at the basilica, the galeota carried it back past the Porto da Barra and the port to the Ponta do Humaitá, arriving around noon. Our Ribeira and Itapagipe guide covers the neighbourhood.
