Where to Stay for Carnival in Salvador circuits and neighbourhoods for 2027
Where to stay for Carnival in Salvador 2027: dates (4 to 9 February), the Barra, Campo Grande and Pelourinho circuits, walking times, the night metro and free buses, and when to book.
The essentials in 30 seconds
Carnival 2027 in Salvador runs officially from Thursday 4 to Tuesday 9 February, with the closing Arrastão on Ash Wednesday, 10 February, and a pre-Carnival programme from Friday 29 January. Choosing where to stay for Carnival in Salvador comes down to which circuit you want at your door: Barra and Ondina sit on the seafront Dodô circuit, Campo Grande is the start of the Osmar circuit, and the historic centre has the free Batatinha circuit in its squares, with the Osmar circuit's turn at Praça Castro Alves about six minutes on foot from the Elevador Lacerda. The city's hotels were 99.5% full on Carnival Sunday 2026, so book the bed first.
Carnival 2027 dates
The city announced a 13-day run for 2027. The calendar below is the one published by A Tarde on 16 October 2026, after the mayor, Bruno Reis, moved the Pipoco to 29 January so it would no longer fall on the Festa de Iemanjá.
| Date | What happens |
|---|---|
| Fri 29 Jan | Pipoco, with Léo Santana |
| Sat 30 Jan | Furdunço |
| Sun 31 Jan | Fuzuê |
| Mon 1 Feb | "A Melhor Segunda-feira do Mundo", with Xanddy Harmonia |
| Tue 2 Feb | Festa de Iemanjá in Rio Vermelho |
| Wed 3 Feb | Habeas Copos and the small bloquinho parades |
| Thu 4 Feb | Official opening of Carnival |
| Fri 5 to Tue 9 Feb | The main days on all circuits |
| Wed 10 Feb | Arrastão da Quarta-feira de Cinzas |
If you can only come for part of it, the dates matter for your bed as much as for the party. Thursday and Friday are calmer, Saturday to Tuesday are the peak, and the pre-Carnival weekend gives you trios on the street with a fraction of the crowd. Our Salvador Carnival guide explains the blocos, abadás and camarotes; this page is about where to sleep.
The three circuits and where they run
Dodô (Barra to Ondina). About 4.5 km of seafront, starting at the Farol da Barra lighthouse and running along the beaches to Ondina. This is where the biggest names pull the biggest trios, where most camarotes are built, and where the crowd is densest from late afternoon into the night.
Osmar (Campo Grande). About 4 km through the old centre of the city. The trios go down Avenida Sete de Setembro, turn at Praça Castro Alves and come back along Avenida Carlos Gomes. It is the original route of the trio elétrico, and it keeps the afoxés and the traditional blocos, including the Filhos de Gandhy, who in 2026 formed up on Rua Chile.
Batatinha (Pelourinho). No trucks at all: stages and small parades on the squares of the historic centre, such as the Largo do Pelourinho, the Largo Tereza Batista and the Praça das Artes. For 2027 the state's "Carnaval no Pelô" programme selected 87 cultural projects for 5 to 9 February. Everything on this circuit is free.
Neighbourhoods by circuit
Every base is a trade between being close to the music and being able to sleep. This table sums up the main choices.
| Where you stay | Nearest circuit | At night | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Barra | Dodô, on your street | Music until late; streets closed to cars | People who want to live inside the party |
| Ondina | Dodô, end of the route | Loud near the avenue; big hotels with pools | Camarote nights, groups wanting a full-service hotel |
| Graça and Vitória | Between Dodô and Osmar | Residential, quieter | Moving between the two big circuits |
| Campo Grande | Osmar, the starting point | Loud on parade nights | The traditional circuit and the afoxés |
| Historic centre (Cidade Alta) | Batatinha at the door; Osmar's turn 6 min away | Quieter streets once the squares close | Families, first-timers, people who want a break |
| Rio Vermelho | None of the three | Bars and the Iemanjá party on 2 Feb | Nightlife off the circuits |
Barra and Ondina
Staying on the Dodô circuit puts you inside the event. You step out of the door and the trios are there, and you can go back to your room between bands. The other side is the same thing: the music plays outside the window for most of the night, the streets inside the circuit are closed to ordinary cars, and getting a taxi out means walking to the edge of the restricted zone first. Prices here are the highest of the week, and the good apartments with a view of the route go first.
Ondina, at the far end, is where the large seafront hotels are. It suits people who will spend a few nights in a camarote and want a pool and a reception desk. Barra suits people who want to dance every night and do not mind the noise.
Campo Grande, Graça and Vitória
Campo Grande is the start of the Osmar circuit, and the streets around the Praça Dois de Julho fill on parade nights. Graça and the Corredor da Vitória lie between the two big circuits. They are residential, with apartment buildings rather than bars, and from there you can walk down to Barra or along to Campo Grande. It is a sensible base for people who want both circuits without sleeping on either of them.
The historic centre (Cidade Alta)
The upper town around the Praça Municipal, Rua Chile and the Pelourinho is the base for people who want Carnival by day and quiet by night. The Batatinha circuit happens in its squares, and the Osmar circuit turns at Praça Castro Alves, at the end of Rua Chile. When you have had enough, the walk home is short and the music of the big trucks stays down on the avenues. It also fills fast: in 2025 the Fera Palace hotel on Rua Chile was reported 100% full in the first days of Carnival.
The trade-off is the seafront. Barra is about 6 km away, so for the Dodô circuit you take the metro or a free Carnival bus from the Lapa station (see below) rather than walk.
Rio Vermelho and the beaches further east
Rio Vermelho is not on any of the three circuits, which makes it a good choice for people who want the bars and restaurants of Salvador's going-out district during Carnival week. On 2 February it hosts the Festa de Iemanjá, which in 2027 falls inside the pre-Carnival days. Pituba and the beaches further east are farther from everything, and every trip to a circuit means crossing a closed city, so we would not choose them for Carnival.
Walking times from the Elevador Lacerda
We measured these walking routes on OpenStreetMap from the top of the Elevador Lacerda, at the Praça Municipal, in October 2026. Crowds on the night will slow you down.
| To | Distance | On foot |
|---|---|---|
| Rua Chile (where the Filhos de Gandhy form up) | about 380 m | 5 min |
| Praça Castro Alves (Osmar circuit) | about 450 m | 6 min |
| Terreiro de Jesus (Batatinha circuit) | about 600 m | 8 min |
| Largo do Pelourinho (Batatinha circuit) | about 830 m | 11 min |
| Praça das Artes (Batatinha circuit) | about 890 m | 12 min |
| Estação da Lapa (metro and free buses to Barra) | about 1.3 km | 18 min |
| Praça Dois de Julho, Campo Grande (Osmar circuit start) | about 2 km | 27 min |
| Farol da Barra (Dodô circuit start) | about 6 km | 77 min |
Getting around during Carnival
Metro. In 2026 Salvador's metro ran non-stop for the seven days of Carnival, from 5:00 on the Thursday to 23:59 on Ash Wednesday, at the normal fare of R$ 4.10 (about US$ 0.80). Between midnight and 5:00, people could board only at four stations: Lapa, Acesso Norte, Águas Claras and Rodoviária. Lapa is the one closest to the historic centre.
Free Carnival buses. In 2026 two special lines, C010 (Lapa to Calabar) and C011 (Lapa to Garibaldi), took people free of charge from the Lapa station to the edge of the Barra circuit, around the clock from the Thursday to Ash Wednesday. The Lapa to Calabar buses left from platform F, on the lower level of the station.
Taxis and ride-hailing. The city sets fixed taxi ranks around the circuits. In recent years one has been at Praça Cayru, in front of the lower exit of the Elevador Lacerda, and ride-hail pick-ups for the Comércio have been on Rua Conceição da Praia. Check the 2027 list on the city's Carnival mobility site before you go, because points move from year to year.
Cars. In 2026 the streets around the circuits were split into five restricted zones from 13:00 to 5:00. Only registered residents and accredited vehicles could drive in, and the fine for entering without a pass was R$ 130.16. Do not plan on driving.
When to book and what it costs
Book the bed before anything else. In 2026 the city reported 99.17% hotel occupancy on the third day of Carnival and 99.5% on the Sunday, up from 2025, and the state put the hotels near the circuits at 100%. Rooms that are left in the last weeks cost far more than the same rooms booked months ahead.
For calibration, press guides in February 2026 quoted dormitory beds from about R$ 120 a night (about US$ 23) and well-placed hotel rooms from more than R$ 600 a night (about US$ 115). Many apartment hosts set minimum stays of several nights for Carnival week, so check the rules of the listing before you plan your flights around one night.
A few habits help:
- Decide which days you want first. Arriving on Thursday 4 February and leaving on Ash Wednesday covers the official week.
- If the official week is full, look at the pre-Carnival nights from 29 January. You will see the Furdunço and Fuzuê trios and the Festa de Iemanjá.
- Read the house rules for Carnival: check-in times, minimum stays and cancellation terms are often different that week.
Families, first-timers and light sleepers
The Batatinha circuit is the family side of Carnival: free, daytime-friendly and on pedestrian squares rather than a six-lane avenue. Thursday and Friday are the gentler official days on the big circuits. For a first Carnival, a base in the historic centre lets you try the trios on the Osmar circuit, come back for a rest, and go to the seafront on one night by metro or the free bus. Light sleepers should avoid apartments that face Avenida Sete, the Barra seafront or the Ondina avenue. Our suites in the Cidade Alta
Via Avantgarde has four suites in the Cidade Alta, a few minutes on foot from the Elevador Lacerda and the Pelourinho. In Carnival week that puts the Batatinha squares and the Osmar circuit at Praça Castro Alves within a short walk, and the Lapa station within about 20 minutes. The Historic Loft is a studio beside the elevator. The suites are booked on Airbnb, and you message the host through Airbnb with any question about Carnival dates. See our four suites.

Frequently asked questions
What are the dates of Salvador Carnival 2027?
The official days are Thursday 4 to Tuesday 9 February 2027, with the Arrastão on Ash Wednesday, 10 February. Pre-Carnival events start on Friday 29 January, and the Festa de Iemanjá is on 2 February.
Which neighbourhood is best to stay in for Carnival in Salvador?
Barra if you want to live on the main seafront circuit, Campo Grande or Graça for the traditional Osmar circuit, and the historic centre if you want the free Pelourinho circuit at your door and a quieter night. There is no single best one; it depends on how much noise you want.
How far is the Pelourinho from the Carnival circuits?
The Batatinha circuit is in the Pelourinho itself. The Osmar circuit turns at Praça Castro Alves, about 450 m from the top of the Elevador Lacerda. The Barra circuit is about 6 km away, reached by metro or the free buses from Lapa.
How do I get from the historic centre to Barra during Carnival?
Walk about 18 minutes to the Lapa station, then take one of the free Carnival bus lines to the edge of the Barra circuit. In 2026 they ran 24 hours a day from Thursday to Ash Wednesday. The metro also runs through the night during Carnival.
When should I book accommodation for Carnival?
As soon as your dates are firm. Salvador's hotels were more than 99% full on the main days of 2026, and the places near the circuits fill first.
Can I drive or use Uber during Carnival?
Driving into the circuit zones needs a resident or accredited pass. Ride-hail cars and taxis use fixed points at the edge of the zones, so expect to walk a few blocks to meet them.
Is it noisy to stay near a circuit?
Yes. On Barra, Ondina, Avenida Sete and Campo Grande the trios play from the afternoon until late at night. The squares of the historic centre close earlier, and the side streets of the Cidade Alta are quieter.
